Implementation of a new learning management system
This page is intended to provide up-to-date information about the project. Below is information about what is current right now and the overall timeline for the project.
Current news
Migration of course room content
There is now information about how the migration process (moving material) from Moodle to Canvas will work. If you want help with this, follow the instructions on the page that is linked.

Other up-to-date information
At the bottom of this page there is a FAQ, with answers to frequently asked questions about the project, logging in to and access to Canvas and other similar questions. For questions about the work in Canvas and the functions available there, we recommend the Canvas section on the Mitti University in Canvas's basic course, which is available to all teachers when they log in to Canvas. There is information about routines, how we work with templates in course rooms in Canvas, as well as a FAQ.
Note that multi-factor authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator is enabled for Canvas, for both teachers and students. This is based on increased demands for security in our systems.
We open Canvas to teachers who have registered their interest or have taught in Moodle for the past two years on 15/1 2025. If you choose to log in already then, you will have access to a self-study course in how to work in Canvas and a so-called sandbox course (test course). Your test course will be based on a template in beta version that is based on the basic structure that all course rooms should follow. The template will be in Swedish. Information about access to the template in English will also be available shortly. The template will be user-tested on both teachers and students on an ongoing basis during the spring, which means that there will probably be changes to the template during the spring semester of 2025.
Summer Courses 2025
This year, summer courses can be given in either Moodle or Canvas. You as a teacher at the summer course choose. If you want to give your summer course in Canvas, you register it in a special form no later than 30/4 2025. Summer courses in Moodle are ordered in the same way as in previous years.
Project timeline
Here is the planned timeline for the introduction of the new learning platform. In autumn 2024, the technical implementation will be carried out, where the system will be set up and connected to other systems that need to interact with the learning platform and logins for all teachers will be created. Then there will be different stages with pilot users during autumn 2024 and pilot courses given in Canvas Spring 2025 (on a voluntary basis). In autumn 2025, all courses that start then will be created in Canvas and in spring 2026, Moodle will be put into reading mode, which means that it is not possible to make changes to course rooms or create new courses, but only read content.

Canvas is Sunet's procured learning platform and is available at around 30 higher education institutions in Sweden, which facilitates collaboration and co-creation of learning resources and support both within and outside Mid Sweden University. Canvas offers a modern environment with the opportunity for teachers to choose how they communicate with students. Additional advantages are that there is good functionality to meet current legal requirements for accessibility as well as a well-functioning mobile app.
