Aim

The course aims to enable the student to develop an advanced understanding of adult learning in both informal and formal contexts. The course also aims to develop the student’s enhanced ability to independently manage the complexity inherent in adults’ informal and formal learning in relation to various contexts, in development work, and in research.

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the main field of Education, including both broad knowledge and significantly advanced understanding of adult learning in formal and informal contexts,
  • demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess, and manage complex phenomena, issues, and situations even with limited information,
  • demonstrate the ability to critically, independently, and creatively identify and formulate questions, to plan and with appropriate methods carry out advanced tasks within given time frames, thereby contributing to the development of knowledge, and to evaluate this work,
  • demonstrate the ability to clearly present and discuss their conclusions, as well as the knowledge and arguments on which these are based, both orally and in writing, in dialogue with others,
  • demonstrate the skills required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in other qualified professional contexts,
  • demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society, and individuals’ responsibility for how it is used,
  • demonstrate the ability to identify their need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their own learning.

Content

The course addresses educational research and theories of adult learning in both informal and formal contexts. The course includes the writing of a text on adult learning that is to discuss and critically examine central scientific concepts in relation to empirical material concerning adult learning in various settings.

Entry requirements

A completed degree of at least 180 credits, including a 15-credit independent project (thesis) in education or a corresponding field, or a completed teacher education degree of at least 180 credits with a 15-credit thesis. Proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to the general entry requirements for higher education in Sweden is also required.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching is conducted mainly online, with a number of mandatory digital meetings.

Examination form

3001: Individual written and oral examination, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale
The examination consists of an individually written text and an oral presentation of that text.
