Aim

The purpose of the course is for the student to further develop and deepen their knowledge of the qualitative research perspective and its scientific‑theoretical foundations in relation to claims of knowledge, as well as the objects of knowledge and research questions within the field of education.

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the philosophy of science in educational research based on qualitative data;
  • demonstrate advanced methodological knowledge within the main field of Education;
  • account for their knowledge and understanding of the main field of Education and demonstrate insight into current research;
  • critically, independently, and creatively identify and formulate scientific questions, plan advanced research tasks within given timeframes, and evaluate this work.

Content

The course discusses the advantages and limitations of qualitative methods in relation to claims of knowledge, research questions, and empirical material. Throughout the course, the theoretical and methodological foundations of qualitative methods are examined; quality criteria, including validity and reliability; research‑ethical guidelines and dilemmas; principles for selecting research methods; and issues concerning the characteristics of research questions specific to the field of education.

Entry requirements

A completed degree comprising at least 180 credits, including a 15‑credit independent project (degree project) in the main field of Education or an equivalent field, or a completed teacher qualification comprising at least 180 credits with a 15‑credit independent project (degree project). In addition, proficiency in Swedish and English is required at the level corresponding to the general entry requirements for first‑cycle higher education in Sweden.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching may be conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, group exercises, and independent study. Teaching may also be carried out in English and through various forms of communication.

Oral and Written Assignment

The student is assessed both in writing and orally through three assignments.

Assignment 1 (3 credits)
Conduct a thematic analysis of a small empirical interview study, individual assignment (Pass with Distinction/Pass/Fail)

Assignment 2 (1.5 credits)
Conduct a document review of one of the compulsory school’s steering documents, group assignment (Pass/Fail)

Assignment 3 (3 credits)
Describe and reflect on the consequences of two different strategic choices—
a) case study and
b) action research—
for a study’s design and methodological choices, individual assignment (Pass with Distinction/Pass/Fail).
