Aim
The course aims to develop students’ understanding of adult learning in informal and formal contexts. It further aims to strengthen students’ ability to address the complexity of adult learning in relation to different contexts, development work, and research.
Course objectives
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding within education, including both an overview of the field and in-depth knowledge of adult learning and andragogy.
Skills and abilities
- demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and to analyze, assess, and manage complex phenomena, issues, and situations, even with limited information,
- demonstrate the ability to clearly present and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based, both orally and in writing, in dialogue with different groups, and
-demonstrate the skills required to participate in research and development work or to work in other qualified professional contexts.
Judgement and approach
- demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society, and people’s responsibility for its use, and
-demonstrate the ability to identify their need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their own learning.
Content
The course addresses adult learning as expressed in theories of adult learning and andragogy, with a particular focus on the conditions for adult learning within organisations.
The course includes educational research and theories concerning adult learning in both informal and formal contexts. Students are required to produce a written paper on adult learning, which discusses and problematizes key scientific concepts in relation to empirical material dealing with adult learning in various contexts.
Entry requirements
A completed Bachelor’s degree of at least 180 credits, including an independent project (degree project) of 15 credits, in Education or a corresponding main field of study, or a completed teacher education degree of at least 180 credits, including an independent project (degree project) of 15 credits.
In addition, proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to the general entry requirements for Swedish higher education at the first cycle is required.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
The course is primarily offered as distance education with a number of compulsory meetings.
Examination form
3001: Individual written and oral examination, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale
The examination consists of individual writing of a text and to oral present the same.
