Aim

The course aims for the student to demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to first‑cycle education and shall, beyond the requirements at the undergraduate level,


- further develop their ability to independently integrate and apply knowledge within the main field of education,
- develop their ability to manage complex phenomena, issues, and situations, and
- develop the conditions required for professional practice that places high demands on independence, or for research and development work within the main field of education.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • demonstrate advanced methodological knowledge in qualitative methods in the study of educational practices,
  • demonstrate the ability, in both national and international contexts, to clearly present and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based, both orally and in writing, in dialogue with different groups,
  • demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyze, assess, and manage complex phenomena, issues, and situations even with limited information,
  • demonstrate the ability within the main field of education to make assessments with consideration of relevant scientific, societal, and ethical aspects, as well as demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
  • demonstrate the ability to identify their need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their own knowledge development.

Content

The course addresses various aspects of qualitative methodology in educational practices. The course includes questions regarding methodological choices, the quality and quantity of empirical data, knowledge implications, and different qualitative analyses. Furthermore, the course includes applying the acquired knowledge in a research design in which the significance of qualitative methods for the knowledge object and the object of study is identified and critically examined, and in which research ethical considerations are also made.

Entry requirements

A completed degree comprising at least 180 credits, including a 15‑credit independent project (degree project) in the main field of Education or an equivalent field, or a completed teacher qualification comprising at least 180 credits with a 15‑credit independent project (degree project). In addition, proficiency in Swedish and English is required at the level corresponding to the general entry requirements for first‑cycle higher education in Sweden.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching may be conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, group exercises, supervision, and independent study. Instruction may be given in English and may involve various forms of communication.

3001: Methodology and Ethics II – Oral and Written Assignment, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale

The student is assessed both in writing and orally. The examination may take place continuously during the course or at the end of the course.


If the student has received a decision from the coordinator at Mid Sweden University regarding educational support due to a disability, the examiner is entitled to provide an adapted form of examination for the student.
