Aim
The purpose of the course is to deepen and broaden knowledge of systems analytical methods and formal problem modeling to study and analyze complex decision problems. The content is guided by the student's area of interest as well as ongoing research in the field at the department.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
- categorize different methods for formal problem modeling and analytical decision support
- assess the informative value of an analytical decision model in a given context
- structure and analyze a complex decision problem
- write and present an academic article
- Review an academic article
Content
Applied systems analysis in society and business.
- Formal problem modeling in areas such as decision analysis, risk analysis, optimization, statistics, data mining
- Project formulation
- Actual work in the chosen application domain, including justification for the chosen method for the purpose
- Documentation, presentation, and evaluation
Rewiew of academic article.
Entry requirements
Industrial Engineering and Mangement BA (ABC), 60 credits or equivalent, including Individual Assignment, 15 credits.
Mathematics BA (AB), 30 credits.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

The course consists of independent work and meetings in the form of seminars.

Grading criteria for 2001 are as follows:
A
A report that meets the criteria for B, and additionally:
- well-supported and adequate development of new or justified improvements to existing risk, decision, or operations analytical models in a complicated/complex domain
B
A report that meets the criteria for C, and additionally:
- novel, critical, and independent thinking
- current research front in the field
C
A report that meets the criteria for D, and additionally:
- a clear account of the chosen risk, decision, or operations analytical method, including background, application, and personal developments/adaptations
D
A report, without significant errors, that meets the criteria for E, and additionally:
- adequate development/adaptation of existing risk and decision models
E
A report may contain some errors but has:
- elements of the research front
- critical and independent thinking
- implementation/example and demonstration of a risk, decision, or operations analytical model in a well-defined domain or organization
Fx
A report contains some errors that can be corrected within an appropriate timeframe with revisions that improve the report to meet the criteria for E
F
A report contains substantial errors, and revisions are deemed unable to improve the report within an appropriate timeframe to meet the criteria for E
