Aim
The course aims to provide an understanding of scientific theoretical starting points, approaches and methods. Furthermore, the course deals with how these are related to each other and how different methodological approaches affect specific method and design choices.
Course objectives
After the course the student shall be able to:
- describe different scientific theoretical starting points
- critically examine the methodological approaches in scientific work
- formulate a research plan containing the purpose, problem statement and choice of method
- reflect on and analyze ethical and societal aspects of research and development work
Content
The course covers theoretical starting points in science, the relationship between theory, research design and method choice, as well as quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Furthermore, the course addresses the practice of research through a focus on the formulation of purpose and issues and the relationship to state-of-the-art, including choice of theory and method.
The course ends with an in-depth project relevant to the student's own discipline, with a research approach and method relevant to the discipline.
Entry requirements
Industrial Engineering and Management BA (A-C), 60 Credits including Individual assignment, 15 credits, or equivalent in Business Administration, Computer and Systems Science, or Informatics
